RAYGUN Railing
RAYGUN, one of Des Moines hippest shops just opened the doors to its brand-spankin’-new location in the East Village. It is THE place for rad clothing, gifts, kiddo gear, and now, coffee and ice cream sandwiches. Factor Fabrication built the custom steel railing for the new digs.
Innovator, big thinker, and RAYGUN owner Mike Draper:
“When we were building the new RAYGUN in Des Moines’ East Village, we noticed the space had stairs and a mezzanine. People falling off those can be bad for business, so we decided to put in a railing that would not only stop people from falling, but would also look good. I called Boonie and he took care of it. Easy to work with, phenomenal design and welding, installation went great, it looks awesome.”
Our New (Old) Truck
We are pretty excited about Factor Fabrication’s new rail-hauling truck. It’s a 1979 GMC 4000 series cabover. The kiddos were shocked to see Boonie lift the entire cab up and over to reveal the engine underneath.
It’s pretty much a little kid’s (and a big kid’s) Hot Wheels dream come to life. Look for it tooling around town hauling our latest projects.
Walnut + Steel Traditional Bench
Boonie built this walnut and steel entry bench for Bethany’s parents new home. Custom trim carpentry is by Custom Projects and Homes.
New Skate Rail
Kevin at Subsect Skateshop asked if Boonie would make this skate rail. Thought the skaters would dig it. Try it out on a sunny day at Subsect on Walnut Street in the East Village in Des Moines.

Have a Heart
The American Heart Association has made seriously incredible strides in the prevention of heart disease (which runs in my family) and preventable death. Which is why we were thrilled when a family friend, Deanna Rabis, who is a volunteer with the organization, asked if we’d donate a piece for the Des Moines Heart Ball.
This bench was constructed from reclaimed Douglas fir barn wood and black powder-coated steel.
Thanks to Deanna and to the American Heart Association for the opportunity to help make a difference.
Around the Shop
ROCA Custom Tables
ROCA is a brand-new restaurant in Des Moines focusing on small plates and artisanal cocktails. It’s housed in one of the oldest buildings in downtown Des Moines, built around 1865, just off the Des Moines River. Chef/owner Jason Kapela had the damaged brick torn off the front of the building, and installed big glass panels that let light flood in. Factor Fabrication built the chef’s table (bottom photo) for ROCA, as well as a modern coffee table, which is a twist on this bench in our collection, with a salvage-wood top and black powder-coated steel legs.
Fun fact. Boonie and I aren’t the network TV-watching type, but we heard The Bachelor filmed an episode here and that the Factor Fabrication table was shown often.
Humble Beginnings
Some people find pens or chapstick in their spouse’s pockets when they do laundry.
I find soapstone chalk.
Boonie and the guys use it to draw out templates and plans on the concrete floor of the shop. Most projects start this way. I think it’s cool that a giant, grand staircase starts as a sketch on the floor.

Far superior to paint or other finishes, powder coating is applied electrostatically and cured under high heat to create a smooth, industrial-strength finish. It’s also more environmentally friendly than most other finishes.
